Reigning Cork senior football kingpins advance as 2013 hurling champs impress

Nemo Rangers and Midleton march on.

REIGNING CORK SENIOR football champions Nemo Rangers marched on yesterday on Leeside while 2013 champions Midleton became the first side to book their place in the last eight of the senior hurling championship.

Nemo Rangers, who lost out in last year’s Munster club final against Clonmel Commercials, enjoyed a 3-12 to 2-9 win over divisional team Muskerry with Cork captain Paul Kerrigan amongst their goalscorers.

Last year’s semi-finalists O’Donovan Rossa were knocked out yesterday by divisional outfit Avondhu by 1-9 to 1-7 while Duhallow cruised to a 3-17 to 0-3 success against Seandun.

Elsewhere last night 2015 finalists Castlehaven defeated the students of Cork IT by 4-17 to 3-9 with Brian and Michael Hurley both raising green flags. St Finbarr’s, inspired by Cork U21 Stephen Sherlock, saw off Carbery by 1-12 to 1-9.

On Saturday night, 2014 senior football finalists Carbery Rangers saw off Douglas by 1-13 to 0-12 in Dunmanway with Kieran Fitzpatrick’s first-half goal crucial.

Valley Rovers defeated last year’s premier intermediate football champions Carrigaline by 0-13 to 0-5 in Kinsale while on Friday night Bishopstown held off a late UCC rally to win by 3-9 to 1-13 in Páirc Uí Rinn.

In Round 2B of the senior football championship, West Cork clubs Clonakilty and Newcestown recovered from first round losses. Clonakilty ran out 3-14 to 0-9 victors against St Nicholas in Bandon while Newcestown saw off Aghada by 3-13 to 1-10 in Ballygarvan.

In hurling, Midleton were extremely impressive in defeating Newtownshandrum by 3-21 to 1-15 in Páirc Uí Rinn in their Round 2A tie while Ballyhea came through the backdoor to see off Carrigtwohill by 2-14 to 1-10 in a Round 2B clash in Kilworth
