Cork too strong for Waterford in Munster senior hurling replay

It was a much easier day at the office for the Leesiders today.

Cork 0-28

Waterford 0-14

CORK MADE LIGHT work of Waterford in their Munster Senior Hurling Championship replay in Semple Stadium this afternoon, running out 14 point winners.

The win means Jimmy Barry Murphy’s men will meet Clare next Sunday in the semi-final in Thurles. Patrick Horgan, Seamus Harnedy and Conor Lehane all impressed for the Leesiders as they led 0-14 to 0-5 at the break.

Waterford struggled to match the intensity of the first game between the two in the opening period. The teams were tied at 0-3 apiece by the 14th minute but then Cork put five unanswered points on the board in the next five minutes.

Cork had extended their lead to nine points at the interval and could have been further ahead but for Waterford goalkeeper Stephen O’Keeffe saving an Anthony Nash penalty in first-half injury-time.

The one-way traffic continued in the second-half and Cork went 0-22 to 0-9 clear by the 54th minute. Austin Gleeson and Pauric Mahony tried hard to help Waterford cut the deficit while big guns like Seamus Prendergast, Maurice Shanahan and Stephen Molumphy were all sprung from the bench.

But Cork closed out the game in style with Horgan finished with 0-10 while Lehane, Harnedy and Bill Cooper also featured prominently.

An excellent afternoon’s work for Cork was rounded off by the sight of Paudie O’Sullivan coming off the bench to hit two late points in his first championship outing for the Rebels since the 2012 All-Ireland semi-final as he recovered from a severe leg injury sustained last year.

Cork now get set for a mouth-watering Munster semi-final tie against Clare next Sunday afternoon in Thurles.

Scorers for Cork: Patrick Horgan 0-10 (0-5f), Conor Lehane 0-4, Seamus Harnedy, Bill Cooper 0-3 each, Daniel Kearney, Paudie O’Sullivan 0-2 each, Christopher Joyce, Alan Cadogan, Rob O’Shea, Stephen Moylan 0-1 each.

Scorers for Waterford: Pauric Mahony 0-5 (0-3f, 0-1 ’65), Austin Gleeson 0-3, Colin Dunford 0-2, Shane O’Sullivan, Shane Walsh, Brian O’Sullivan, Richie Foley 0-1 each.
