Sunny shines as Bangladesh thrash Ireland

The Irish team were beaten comprehensively in a Twenty20 international at Stormont this evening.

BANGLADESH CRUSHED IRELAND by 71 runs in their opening Twenty20 international at Stormont on Wednesday.

Spinner Elias Sunny took five wickets as Bangladesh restricted Ireland to 119 for 8 off 20 overs in reply to 190-5.

Sunny ended with career best figures of 5-13 off four overs, while Shakib Al Hasan starred with 57 runs off 33 balls for the tourists.

Bangladesh were sent into bat and made a fast start through openers Tamim Iqbal (31 runs off 31 balls) and Mohammad Ashraful.

Ashraful was the first wicket to fall, bowled by Max Sorensen for 15 off 13 balls, paving the way for Shakib to enter the fold.

Shakib wasted no time at the crease with nine boundaries before he was beaten by a turning Paul Stirling delivery.

Mushfiqur Rahim (six off five) and Mahmudullah (23 off 15) added further runs, but it was Ziaur Rahman who stole the show late on with five 6s on his way to 40 not out.

Ireland raced to 0-30 off three overs but fell to 60-6 by the 11th over with Abdur Razzak making the crucial breakthrough when he had William Porterfield (26 off 16) stumped  in the fourth over.

Razzak ran out Stirling (four off eight) one over later before Sunny took over as Ireland’s chief tormentor.

In his first over, the 26-year-old left-arm off spinner dismissed Ed Joyce (11 off 18) and Niall O’Brien (eight off eight) in consecutive deliveries before adding the wickets of John Mooney, Alex Cusack and Trent Johnston later to his haul later in the innings.

Razzak was Bangladesh’s only other wicket-taker and finished Ireland’s innings with impressive figures of 2-9 off four overs.

Gary Wilson provided the most resistance of any of the home side’s batsmen with an unbeaten 41 off 36 balls.

The 26-year-old hit four boundaries and one six but did not have enough support to lead Ireland to victory.

Wednesday’s win gives Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the three-match Twenty20 series.

The series provides preparation for both sides ahead of the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September and October.

After the series, Bangladesh will move on to the Netherlands where they will play Scotland and the host nation.
