The Daily Fix: Saturday

All the day’s main news, plus the bits and pieces you may have missed.

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of all the day’s main news as well as the bits and pieces that you may have missed.

  • The annual celebration of James Joyce’s seminal work Ulysses took place today with multiple Bloomsday events marking the occasion across the country. President Michael D Higgins got involved, as did a number of TDs and councillors. Meanwhile, we’ve been asking you to be honest and tell us if you have read all 500-plus pages of the novel in today’s poll. If not, here’s a handy cheat-sheet.
  • Eurozone leaders continued to pile the pressure on Greece today with Germany warning Athens that it must stick to all bailout agreements, regardless of what government is elected tomorrow. French president Francois Hollande said he held a ‘fruitful and constructive’ discussion with Angela Merkel this evening.
  • As violence continues to intensify in Syria, the United Nations has pulled its team of observers from the country and suspended all missions and patrols.
  • More than two decades after she was honoured with the award, Burmese pro-democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi accepted the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Oslo today. On receiving a standing ovation, she told the audience that the honour in 1991 brought her back from an ‘isolated, lonely path’.
  • A 19-year-old man died last night after the car he was travelling in hit a wall and went into the water off the Wexford coast. His body was later recovered from the submerged vehicle. Two other young passengers managed to swim to safety.
  • In more sad news today, a 24-year-old Welsh rally co-driver has died in Sicily after his Irish team-mate’s car crashed on a bend while taking part in the Targo Florio. Gareth Roberts was fatally injured but Craig Breen escaped unscathed.

Exhausted: The parents of a baby Douroucouli, born 1 June, take a break in their enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo.

  • Over the past two weeks, a number of seals have been killed in apparent violent attacks. TheJournal.ie investigates.
  • A group of Irish priests have strongly criticised a cardinal’s report which described a college’s reputation as ‘gay-friendly’. The Association of Catholic Priests called Timothy Dolan’s report “prurient” and “incompetent”.
  • Can you get arrested for things you say on Facebook and Twitter? Yes.
  • There are widespread reports today that Apple’s iPad will have a new competitor by Monday. Microsoft has got people talking about a possible rival tablet after inviting reporters to a ‘major announcement’ in LA.
  • In this evening’s column, Fergus O’Connell suggests making 29 September National Muppets Day to remember the “day that changed the nation forever”.
  • This is the week that was…in photos and in numbers.
  • UCD had some famous faces don their graduation robes today. We would like to have taken a class with this pair.
  • While some real-life people with fabulous lifestyles can be incredibly boring on Twitter, some mundane and inanimate objects have actually proven pretty funny on the micro-blogging site. The Sad Apostrophe, Big Ben and A Photocopier have all made our list.
  • Brian O’Driscoll et al were left ‘gutted’ this morning after Dan Carter’s last gasp drop goal earned a 22-19 win for New Zealand in Ireland’s second test game against the All Blacks.
  • Staying with sport, it’s getting interesting over at the Euros as the Group A finale gets underway with hosts Poland taking on the Czech Republic, while Russia face off against Greece. Conor Nagle is following both games over at TheScore.ie.
  • Finally, do you ever get uncomfortable when someone walks too close to you? Now be thankful they didn’t try to hold your hand because, well, that’s just awkward:
