Danish duo extend lead at World Cup of Golf, Irish pair eighth

Soren Kjeldsen and Thorbjorn Olesen carded a 70 to increase Denmark’s overnight lead by one stroke at Kingston Heath Golf Club.

DANISH DUO SOREN Kjeldsen and Thorbjorn Olesen continued their stranglehold on the World Cup of Golf as they moved four shots clear after the third round in Melbourne on Saturday.

Kjeldsen and Olesen carded a penultimate-round 70 to increase Denmark’s overnight lead by one stroke at Kingston Heath Golf Club.

The pair posted a mixed bag with five birdies and three bogeys but it was enough to have Denmark poised to win the PGA Tour tournament.

Denmark bogeyed their third hole of the day but they regrouped by birdieing the fourth and fifth before gaining another stroke at the eighth.

Kjeldsen and Olesen added another two birdies sandwiched in between a bogey on the back nine, and they bogeyed the 17th to drop to 14 under overall, still ahead of America.

American pair Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker shot a three-under-par 69 to remain in the hunt for silverware heading into Sunday’s final round.

A flawless back nine, which featured one birdie, helped the duo climb two positions and into second.

China’s Wu Ashun and Li Haotong are five shots off the pace following their 72, while Japan (71), France (72) and Spain (73) are tied for fourth and two strokes further back.

Francesco Molinari and Matteo Manassero of Italy recorded a one-over-par 73 to slide three positions to seventh at six under through 54 holes.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry and Graeme McDowell are tied for eighth and nine shots adrift following their third-round 70, alongside New Zealand (72) and Sweden (73).
