2010 Allstar Danny Hughes retires from inter-county football

The Down forward has hung up his boots after injuries plagued him in recent campaigns.

2010 FOOTBALL ALLSTAR Danny Hughes has brought his inter-county career to an end.

The Down forward has been plagued by injuries in recent years and manager James McCartan revealed after Saturday night’s Division 2 win over Louth that the Saval club man had decided to call it a day.

Hughes was one of the key figures in Down’s march to the 2010 All-Ireland final against Cork where they fell short by 0-16 to 0-15 in Croke Park.

Hughes grabbed 0-3 from play in that game while his creativity and playmaking were central to McCartan’s side progress that season.

But injuries interrupted his career since then. Hughes did not feature in either of Down’s Ulster championship ties against Derry or Donegal last season while his last appearance was as a late substitute in their qualifier defeat to Derry last July.
