CUALA’S BID FOR a fifth title in six years got off to a positive start today as club GAA action returned to the capital after being put on hold by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The reigning champions ran out 1-22 to 0-15 winners against Thomas Davis on a busy day in the Dublin Senior Hurling Championship. Also in Group 4, Na Fianna trounced Setanta by 5-32 to 1-16.

Danny Sutcliffe was the key man as St Jude’s secured a draw against Faughs in this afternoon’s opener. The Dublin inter-county star’s late equalising point was his 12th of the game. In the other Group 3 fixture, St Brigid’s – last year’s beaten finalists – eased past Whitehall Colmcille on a scoreline of 1-18 to 0-6.

In Group 1, St Vincent’s recorded a 2-21 to 1-16 win over St Oliver Plunkett’s Eoghan Ruadh, and Lucan Sarsfields beat Ballinteer St John’s by 2-18 to 1-14.

Craobh Chiaráin got the first points on the board in Group 2 courtesy of a 1-18 to 1-9 victory at the expense of Scoil Uí Chonaill. Kilmacud Crokes and Ballyboden St Enda’s are scheduled to meet in Parnell Park tomorrow at 3pm.

In the Wexford Senior Hurling Championship, Shelmaliers defeated Rapparees by five points – 2-14 to 2-9 – in the opening game of their round-robin series.

In an evenly contested game, Shelmaliers really came to life in the second-half, overturning a three-point gap. Nick Doyle had scored the first Rapparees goal but Joe Kelly replied with a goal for Shelmaliers.

When Kevin Ryan got their second goal, Rapparees looked like claiming the victory but Ross Banville thought otherwise, producing a superb individual display, getting key scores before James Cash got their second goal late on to seal the win.

Elsewhere, a Lee Chin-inspired Faythe Harriers side edged out Ferns St Aidan’s by 2-11 to 0-16.
