RYAN DAY RALLIED for a remarkable Crucible comeback against Ding Junhui this afternoon, winning the final four frames to dump the Chinese seed out in the first round of the World Snooker Championship.
The Welshman led 5-4 overnight and extended his advantage in the first frame of this morning’s session with a break of 70.
But world number 10 Ding responded superbly, winning five frames in a row to leave himself on the cusp of a place in the second round at 9-6.
Ding had plenty of chances to see out his win but left the door open for Day who won the next three frames to take the match to a final-frame decider.
And after setting himself up with a break of 48, Ding missed a red with the rest which allowed Day to nip in for a winning 64.
The 32-year-old will now meet another Chinese opponent, Cao Yupeng, in the second round.
In this morning’s other game, former champion Graeme Dott fell to a devastating 10-1 defeat against Joe Perry. Perry meets Stephen Maguire in the next round.
