Lest we forget: Ceremony remembers Defence Force members who died in service

Army, Air Corps, and Naval Service members participated in the military guard in Dublin this afternoon.

THE DEFENCE FORCES have held the first of a series of ceremonies to remember those who died in service.

The commemoration took place at the site of the national memorial to members of the Defence Forces in Merrion Square Park in Dublin this afternoon.

Units from across the Army, Air Corps, Defence Forces, and Naval Service participated in the military guard ceremony to remember fallen comrades, which began and neded with two bugle calls.

Unit commanders and members of the public laid wreaths during the commemoration.

The ceremony will take place every Saturday at the same site between now and 23 August.

The national memorial was unveiled in 2008, and its pyramid shape is a reference to burial. Inside the pyramid, four bronze figures, representing the four parts of the Defence Forces, stand guard over an eternal flame.
