Ireland U20s prop Coulson joins Grenoble's growing Irish legion

The loosehead won a Leinster Schools Senior Cup with St. Michael’s in 2012.

IRELAND U20s PROP Denis Coulson has signed for Grenoble, joining compatriots James Hart and Chris Farrell at the Top 14 club.

The former St. Michael’s student has agreed academy terms and will make the move to France later this month. Scrum-half Hart is already established at FCG with 18 league starts under his belt, while Farrell is currently impressing in his first pre-season after joining from Ulster.

Former Ireland international hooker Bernard Jackman has moved into the position of head coach at the Isère-based club this season, while ex-Munster halfback Mike Prendergast has been promoted to the role of backs coach.

Coulson provides the latest Irish link, having impressed the Grenoble management during his eight appearances for Mike Ruddock’s Ireland U20s side this year in the Six Nations and Junior World Championship campaigns.

The Dublin native came through Leinster’s underage teams and impressed in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup, appearing in the 2012 final as a fifth year and helping a Dan Leavy-captained Michael’s to victory over Clongowes.

Coulson has played club rugby with Lansdowne in Dublin, while he secured a scholarship to Carlow IT after leaving school. His rugby career now takes him to France, where the 108kg prop will look to progress in Grenoble’s formation.

Young Munster’s Shane O’Leary made a similar switch to FCG last season and played in the Amlin Challenge Cup five times, before securing a contract with Connacht for the 2014/15 season.
