Anniversary

Take a break - and watch Dermot Morgan's spot-on impressions of Dunphy, Michael Noonan and Michael D

Some of Morgan’s comedy still remains remarkably topical – 17 years after his death.

BELIEVE IT OR not – it’s seventeen years since we lost Dermot Morgan.

The comedian and actor – best known as the star of Father Ted – had just finished filming the third series of the hit Channel 4 comedy, when he passed away after a heart attack.

Of course – before finding international fame as the put-upon priest, Morgan had a long career in comedy in Ireland.

From early appearances on shows like The Live Mike to the huge success of satirical radio show Scrap Saturday – his ability to create new characters and carry-off spot-on (and often merciless) impersonations of Irish political figures made him a household name.

This compilation clip, from the Late Late, pulls together some of his best impressions.

And nearly two decades after the satirist’s death – it’s remarkable how many of his targets are still active in public life… Michael D makes a cameo appearance, as does Michael Noonan, and of course – Eamon Dunphy.

His Charlie Haughey was streets ahead of Aidan Gillen’s interpretation too – we reckon.
