Lorry hijacked and driver ordered to take suspicious object to police station

The incident happened in Derry early this afternoon.

TWO MASKED MEN hijacked a delivery lorry in Derry earlier today, before loading a suspicious object into the back and ordering the driver to take it to Strand Road police station.

PSNI were notified of the incident at about 12.30pm and the vehicle was stopped at the Buncrana Road.

The nearby St Columb’s College was evacuated, as were staff at business units in the Pennyburn Industrial Estate.

It is understood the object put into the back of the lorry was a wheelie bin. The army bomb disposal expert team has been deployed.

MLA for the Foyle area, Colum Eastwood, said those responsible for the suspected, attempted bomb attack are “cowards”.

The SDLP member said the city would not be “dragged back to the barbarity of the past by mindless thugs devoted to terror”.

“It appears that Strand Road police station was the intended target for this device but, for the brave actions of the person who was ordered to transport the suspected bomb we could be faced with devastating consequences this afternoon.”
