LONGFORD SECURED A two point win over 14-man Waterford at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park this afternoon to join Offaly at the top of Division 4 of the Allianz National Football League.
A goal for Francis McGee helped Longford into a nine-point half time lead, 1-10 to 0-4. However, Jack Sheedy’s men could only manage two points in the second half.
Despite the McGrath Cup champions’ best efforts, they couldn’t quite close the gap and fell just short despite a Mark Ferncombe maximum.
The win moves Longford level with Offaly after the Faithful could only manage a draw with Leitrim despite holding an equally commanding half time lead, Willie Mulhall and Nigel Dunne’s goals giving them a 2-7 to 0-5 advantage at the break.
However, Kevin Conlon’s second half penalty prompted a Leitrim comeback and the Connacht side could have taken both points were it not for Mulhall’s free deep into injury time.
Elsewhere Carlow and Wicklow could also played out a draw while Antrim’s win over London means the drive for promotion to Division 3 looks set to be a four horse race.
