THE DEPARTMENT OF Justice has announced details of how money from dormant accounts will be used.

As much as €2.8 million will be provided to the Irish Youth Justice Service Community Programmes.

This is a service aimed at supporting young people in marginalised communities, Minister Frances Fitzgerald said in a statement.

“The Dormant Accounts Disbursement Scheme will enable my Department through the community programmes schemes administered by the Irish Youth Justice Service to have a direct and important impact on the personal and social development of those young people coming into contact with the criminal justice system,” she said.

An additional €233,000 will go towards support services for victims of crimes.

These include the Crime Victims Helpline and Victim Support at Court.

“These are just two of number of initiatives I intend to pursue in 2015 to greatly strengthen the rights of victims in our criminal justice system,” Fitzgerald added.

Figures released to TheJournal.ie in August revealed that of the €43 million declared dormant, just €8 million was reclaimed.
