Down star Clarke set for AFL return

The footballer will recommence playing Aussie Rules for Collingwood after turning out for Down in this year’s Championship.

DOWN FOOTBALLER MARTIN Clarke is returning to the AFL after signing for Collingwood, according to reports.

Clarke was originally chosen to play for the club as an international rookie in 2006 and was subsequently promoted to the team’s senior list.

The player then returned for a short stint in GAA, helping Down to reach the All-Ireland final last year and receiving an All-Star award for his efforts.

He joins fellow county-man Caolan Mooney in the side – a player who has featured for Down minors in the past.

Clarke is one of several GAA stars to play in the AFL, following in the footsteps of players such as Setanta Ó hAilpín, Tadhg Kennelly and Jim Stynes.

Collingwood are the current AFL champions and the best supported club in Australian sport.
