Dublin hurling hit again as Hiney is ruled out for season

Captain damaged his cruciate ligament during Sunday’s league win over Wexford.

DUBLIN HURLING RECEIVED another blow today after it was revealed that influential captain Stephen Hiney will miss the rest of the season.

Hiney was stretchered off 46 minutes into Dublin’s victory over Wexford in the Allianz Hurling League on Sunday. A scan on Monday night revealed the Ballyboden-St Endas man had suffered a complete rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament, according to GAA.ie.

Anthony Daly’s side must be cursing their luck, as they are already without David Treacy and Shane Stapleton, both of whom are currently undergoing rehabilitation from injuries similar to Hiney’s. Alan McCrabbe is also sidelined with a hip problem that has threatened to end the former All Star’s career.

Hiney’s addition to the long list of wounded is all the more frustrating, given that the Dubs are leading Division 1 after three wins and a draw. Dublin selector Ciaran Hetherton spoke of the captain’s disappointment:

Stephen is devastated by the news but he is a strong character and will get every support in his recovery.

He has been an inspirational captain and player and his position will not be easily filled.

Anthony Daly will now have to plan for the summer’s championship without Hiney as it is believed he may not return to action again until next year.
