Sunday GAA results round-up

There were 17 games on this afternoon as the 2013 Gaelic Football season got underway. Here are the outcomes from across the four provinces.

Bórd Na Móna O’Byrne Cup

In Group A there were victories today for Meath and Louth.

The Royals enjoyed a rewarding trip to Ballymahon in their game as they defeated Longford by 1-9 to 1-7 with Damien Carroll hitting the net from the penalty spot for Meath. While in Drogheda, Louth were too strong against UCD as they got their season off to a winning start by 2-15 to 1-13.

In Group B, Jim Gavin took his Dublin side to Dr Cullen Park and saw them emerge with a 3-13 to 1-12 success against Carlow. Diarmuid Connolly, Robbie McCarthy and Paddy Quinn struck goals for Dublin. The other clash was held in Greystones and finished all square, DCU 2-9 Wicklow 1-12.

Meanwhile in Group C, Offaly were triumphant in Tullamore when they had three points to spare against near neighbors Laois as they won out by 1-11 to 1-8. Westmeath are also setting the pace in this group as they enjoyed a 1-22 to 0-13 victory over Athlone IT in Moate.

Finally in the O’Byrne Cup, there were two clashes in Group D. DIT made a successful trip to Enniscorthy as they came away with a 1-15 to 1-11 win over Wexford. While Kildare were in control against Carlow IT as they triumphed by 1-13 to 0-7 in Newbridge.

Group A: Meath 1-9 Longford 1-7; Louth 2-15 UCD 1-13.
Group B: Dublin 3-13 Carlow 1-12; DCU 2-9 Wicklow 1-12.
Group C: Offaly 1-11 Laois 1-8; Westmeath 1-22 Athlone IT 0-13.
Group D: DIT 1-15 Wexford 1-11; Kildare 1-13 Carlow IT 0-7.

FBD League

In Section A, the inter-county sides reigned supreme as Sligo and Galway had too much for their respective third-level counterparts IT Sligo and NUI Galway. In Ballinode, Sligo were 0-14 to 0-5 victors over IT Sligo while in Tuam, Galway had ten points to spare in a 0-16 to 0-6 win against NUI Galway.

There was just the one game in Section B as Leitrim overturned Roscommon by 0-6 to 0-5 in Elphin.

Section A: Sligo 0-14 IT Sligo 0-5; Galway 0-16 NUI Galway 0-6.
Section B: Leitrim 0-6 Roscommon 0-5.

McGrath Cup

Reigning champions Cork got the better of Cork IT by 1-15 to 0-11 in a game played at the third-level outfit’s grounds in Bishopstown with Donncha O’Connor’s goal proving key to their seven-point success. Even the dismissal of attacker Paul Kerrigan towards the end of the game failed to halt Cork’s march to victory.

In the other preliminary round game played today in Milltown-Malbay, Clare were far too strong for Limerick IT as they romped to a 1-20 to 1-2 win. In his first game in charge Mick O’Dwyer oversaw a comprehensive win for his side with Gary Brennan raising their green flag.

Preliminary Round: FT – Cork 1-15 Cork IT 0-11; Clare 1-20 Limerick IT 1-2.

Power NI Dr McKenna Cup

Monaghan opened their Section A campaign on a successful note with a 1-13 to 2-7 victory over St Mary’s in Clones. In Section B, Cavan were defeated on home soil in Kingspan Breffni Park by Down as the Mourne men triumphed by 1-11 to 0-12.

Finally in Section C, Tyrone were 1-14 to 0-15 victors against Derry in Healy Park in Omagh with Connor McAliskey grabbing their goal. Antrim beat UUJ by 1-15 to 2-9 in Casement Park.

Section A: Monaghan 1-13 St Mary’s 2-7.
Section B: Cavan 1-11 Down 0-12.
Section C: Tyrone 1-14 Derry 0-15; Antrim 1-15 UUJ 2-9.
