'If Martin O'Neill left the job tomorrow, Stephen Kenny would rightly be the favourite for Ireland manager'

RTÉ pundits Eamon Dunphy and Dietmar Hamann sit down to discuss Dundalk, Ireland and next week’s World Cup qualifier with Austria.

TWO OF RTÉ’S regular analysts joined us to chat about some of the big talking points in Irish football this week.

Dundalk pair Daryl Horgan and Andy Boyle were both named in Ireland’s provisional senior squad for the first time on Wednesday and Eamon Dunphy believes the international recognition is fully-deserved.

Dunphy went on to sing the praises of Lilywhites boss Stephen Kenny and suggested the Dubliner would be the front-runner to replace Martin O’Neill in the hot seat in the unlikely event that the current manager was to step down.

The outspoken former Ireland international turned journalist, who is starting his own podcast, has been critical of several decisions made by O’Neill during his three years in charge.

However, he admitted that it’s hard to argue with recent results as the Boys in Green sit joint-top of Group D with Serbia on seven points after three matches.

Next up for Ireland is a trip to Vienna for another crucial qualifier on 12 November. Austria were tipped as dark horses at Euro 2016 but under-performed and finished bottom of their group in France with just one point.

They were also beaten by Serbia last time out, and former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Hamann says he’s confident that Ireland can qualify for the 2018 World Cup if they can pick up points in tricky fixtures like this one.
