Eamonn Magee Jr death: Man due in court charged with boxer's murder

The 22-year-old was stabbed several times as he came out of a house to check on a pizza delivery.

A MAN IS due in court later after being charged with the murder of boxer Eamonn Magee Junior, who was stabbed to death in Belfast on Saturday morning.

The 22-year-old was the son of former WBU welterweight champion Eamonn Magee Sr.

Detective Chief Inspector John McVea, who is heading up the investigation into the young man’s death, described it as “tragic, especially for his family, partner and friends”.

“He was a very talented boxer with a promising boxing career ahead as well as studying engineering at the University of Ulster.

It is sad this young life has been taken away so needlessly.

He was visiting a friend in a house that backs onto Summerhill Park, and came out to check for pizza delivery at around 2.30am on Saturday, McVea said.

“Eamonn was stabbed a number of times in the garden of the house he was visiting and later died as a result of his injuries.”

Speaking to UTV, Eamonn Magee Senior said: “You never think these things are going to come to your door – it’s been a terrible shock for us all.”

I coached Eamonn, I was with him every day. Reality has not kicked in yet… that’s life.

The 32-year-old man charged last night is due to appear at Craigavon Magistrate’s Court later.
