Murder

Friends of Elaine O'Hara say "It was Elaine’s life that was put on trial, not Dwyer’s"

They described Dwyer as “a cold calculating man”.

AS GRAHAM DWYER starts his life sentence in prison today for the murder of Elaine O’Hara, Elaine’s friends have spoken out about how she was ‘a kind and willing person’.

Caroline Nugent and Jane Carroll said Elaine would do “anything for anybody and was always there to help out”.

Speaking to Anton Savage on Today FM, Carroll said Elaine was lonely.

“She tried so hard to meet new friends, one year she did sailing, another year she did hiking, she played squash.”

She didn’t really have the patience to wait for friendships to develop out of these clubs.

‘Sick guy who manipulated Elaine’

Caroline described Graham Dwyer as “a cold calculating man, he showed no feelings…He just didn’t care or didn’t accept what he had done”.

When asked if Dwyer showed any expression yesterday when he was handed down his sentence, Jane replied: “No, the only reaction he seemed to have was when his wife and children were mentioned. He almost had the perfect murder.

He didn’t show any expression, any remorse, he didn’t react to any of the horrific things. He was just cold…Sick, sick guy, who really manipulated Elaine’s vulnerability.

Caroline added, “There are no words that could explain how awful; the details that came out were just horrific, it was too disturbing, it was absolutely awful.”

Jane said she was told by the gardaí that the case was going to get ‘really quite harrowing at times’ but she feels Elaine was put on trail during the case.

It was Elaine’s life that was put on trial, not Mr Dwyer’s.
