11 totally mortifying Irish celebrity encounters

Scarlet for all of ye.

EVEN THE MOST confident people can make an absolute tit of themselves in front of their favourite celebrity. Or any celebrity, as the case may be.

Inspired by this Buzzfeed post, we asked the good people of TheJournal.ie and DailyEdge.ie towers to share there most embarrassing celebrity experiences.

There were many. So many.

1. Cliff Richard

I met Cliff Richard in a restaurant in Portugal (he has a vineyard near the restaurant). I had a photo taken with him and said: “I hope your wine is better than the awful stuff we’re drinking here.”
The waiter very kindly informed us that we were in fact drinking the wine from Cliff’s vineyard.

2. Joe Hart

While standing at a urinal in Coppers two years ago Joe Hart came in and took a leak beside me. Asked him back to a house party and he kindly told me to f**k off.

3. Jared Leto

I met Jared Leto at Oxegen, and he asked if we wanted to come side stage to watch his band play. I blurted out “No thanks”. He was fairly put out. Like, I had loved him deeply as a teenager, and then I insulted him.

4. Daniel O’Donnell

One of Daniel O’Donnell’s best friends lives up the road from my mam. When I was a kid he used to spend a couple of weeks in the house every summer. I was the same age as one of the kids in the house so I used to regularly see Daniel out sunbathing in the back garden. In his Y-fronts.

5. Bruce Springsteen

I met Bruce Springsteen in 2009 as he was buying what appeared to be a bag of cans in a newsagents on Westmoreland Street. I had been at his concert the night before, so I went over to say hi and thank him – and proceeded to shake his hand for the entire duration of the conversation, which lasted about 45 seconds.

6. Ronnie O’Sullivan

I shook Ronnie O’Sullivan’s hand for the entire minute we chatted at Stansted Airport. The worst part was that I was so starstruck I had gone for the two-handed handshake in which both my hands clasped his one hand. I was essentially holding his hand as we talked about snooker.

7. Gay Byrne

I met Gay Byrne at Spamalot. During the intermission we were buying ice cream, my friend was with me and Gay was buying for his wife. He copped I was looking at him, so he said hello.
When he saw my mate had his money out, he said “I guess you’re paying so” to which I just kind of laughed nervously and said “It’s not a date”. I have no idea why.

8. Patrick Kielty

I once asked Patrick Kielty if he was Patrick Kielty, to which he replied “yes” and I said “cool” and kept walking.

9. David Kitt

The first year I went to Glastonbury, myself and a buddy bumped into two of the Magic Numbers who were standing around having a chat with another fella. We decided we’d ask for a picture, and handed the camera to their friend.
As he took a step back, I spotted the artist’s accreditation around his neck and the name David Kitt. Awkwardly tried to cover it up with a “Aaaah, only messing Kittser, of course we want you in here too.” I don’t think it worked.

“Kittser”.

10. Paul McGrath

I told Paul McGrath he ruined my life. I meant that he was responsible for my being an Aston Villa fan, but he looked really hurt and walked away before I could properly explain.

11. Samantha Mumba

My mum once had a full conversation with Samantha Mumba thinking she worked with her in Roches.
