Plane makes emergency landing at UK airport after engine catches fire

The fire service said the incident had the potential to be very serious.

AN ENGINE FIRE forced a plane with 28 passengers on board to make an emergency landing in Essex today.

The incident occurred at Southend Airport at about 8.30am this morning. No one was hurt in the incident.

Fire

One of the two propeller-powered engines went up in a blaze, but that that fire suppression systems on the plane extinguished the fire before it landed.

Firefighters inspected the engine to ensure the fire was completely out but took no further action. Essex Fire Service said that crews began leaving the scene at 9am.

Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick, who attended the incident, said:

This was a text book operation. The fire was out by the time the plane touched down and no one appears to have been hurt. The plane landed safely on one engine and automatic fire suppression systems on board had completely extinguished the fire.

He added that it had the potential to be an “extremely serious incident” but said “everything which should happen in a situation like this did and the plane was able to land safely and no one has been hurt”.
