Enda Kenny: 'I expect to win the next election'

The Taoiseach would not say if he would be interested in a job in Europe if he failed to get elected next time round.

TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY said he fully expects to win the next election.

Speaking to Bobby Kerr on Newstalk this morning, Kenny said:

“I expect to win the next election and to serve the full term of the next government.”

He would not be drawn on whether he would take up a job in Europe if he failed to get re-elected.

He said that when his time is done in Irish politics he has a lot of things he would like to do and places he would like to see.

Kenny said there was still work to do to ensure that generations coming up behind do not have to go through another recession like the one that was experienced in the crash.

“I believe we can put our country in a place where it will never run back.”

He said that when the government was elected the country had no integrity and Ireland’s reputation “was in shreds”. All that has changed now, he said.

Kenny said all he wanted to do was to “leave the country in a better position he found it”.

The Taoiseach also said that Ireland’s rural economy is not dead.

“I don’t buy in to the thesis that rural Ireland is dead.”

He said every region has different strengths and those different strengths have to be catered for.

He admitted there had been catastrophes and suffering in many areas, but things were improving.

Kenny said when he moves on from Irish politics he hopes to leave a legacy of creating a better Ireland.
