TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY was heckled by protesters at an event in Sligo this afternoon.

The Taoiseach and US US Ambassador Kevin O’Malley were unveiling a statue in Ballymote to commemorate the Irish who fought in the American civil war.

Ocean FM reports that as many as 100 protesters were in attendance, a significant portion of the 250-strong crowd at the event.

The group were protesting against water charges and the presence of US military aircraft at Shannon Airport.

O’Malley faced shouts of “war monger” as he attempted to speak.

Local media report that the protesters initially said they would remain silent and turn their backs when Kenny took the stage.

Speaking after the event, the Taoiseach said he was eager to meet with UK Prime Minister David Cameron to discuss key issues facing both countries.

The pair spoke this morning over the phone:

The Taoiseach told reporters that the UK referendum on EU membership could have serious implications for Ireland.
