Eric Abidal on road to recovery following transplant

The French defender went under the knife before the Catalan side’s 4-0 win over Getafe last night.

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has started his recovery from a liver transplant after undergoing surgery on Tuesday.

Head coach Pep Guardiola confirmed the news when he spoke to the press after the club’s 4-0 thrashing of Getafe on Tuesday, during which the fans chanted Abidal’s name during the 22nd minute in a reference to his shirt number.

“Before coming here, I’ve been told that the operation has been finished, and we’ll have to wait 48 hours to see his evolution,” Guardiola said.

“We have to be prudent. During the week we’ll know more. The next days will be crucial to see how it goes. We’ve got plenty of faith in such a strong man.”

32-year-old Abidal underwent surgery to remove a tumor on his liver in March last year and returned for the final part of the season.

He played with the Catalan giants until last month, when the club announced a transplant was required.

Today Hayet Abidal, the player’s wife, posted an update on his Facebook page to indicate that he and his cousin Gerard, the donor of the new liver, are coping well.

“For the moment, everything is OK.” wrote Hayet, adding that her husband, “really wants to thank all of you for your messages, your support and all the strength you give him.”
