IRELAND MIDFIELDER James McCarthy says he hopes Giovanni Trapattoni stays on after tonight’s 4-1 win over the Faroe Islands.
The Wigan man earned the man-of-the-match award with an assured performance in the centre of the park in Torshavn.
And he says the win was for the under-pressure Italian.
“[That was] brilliant from the boys, we worked really hard and put a good shift in and got the goals we wanted,” he said. “It’s a great result to come away from here especially on the plastic pitch. We done very well.
“Obviously the pressure’s on everyone. To get beat 6-1, it’s not nice but it’s a great one for the boss. But he’s been brilliant since I’ve come into the squad,” he told RTÉ.
Ireland were held in a scoreless first period by one of the traditional minnows of European football but McCarthy insists the side never panicked.
“We always believed in ourselves, the boss had a chat at half time and said ‘keep playing, it’ll come eventually’. And we kept playing and the goal came and to get three points here is great, it’s not an easy place to come.
“The pitch — even though people complain about it — it worked well for us. We passed the ball very well. I thought Jonny Walters was superb up top and he grabbed himself a couple of goals but most importantly we came away with the points.”
When asked by Tony O’Donoghue if he wanted Trapattoni and Tardelli to stay in their jobs, he responded: ‘Yes, definitely’.
