Fermanagh GAA shocked by death of county player Brian Óg Maguire

The Lisnaskea Emmetts clubman was killed in an industrial accident at work this morning.

FERMANAGH FOOTBALLER Brian Óg Maguire has died in an industrial accident at a factory in the county today.

The incident occurred at around 11am in the Ballymaconnell Rd area in Derrylin. Health and Safety officials are now investigating.

“Fermanagh GAA county committee, county senior football management team and players are shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of our county senior player and team-mate Brian Óg Maguire due to an accident at his work,” a statement from Erne County chiefs reads.

“We extend our sympathy to Brian Óg’s parents Brian and Eileen, sisters Roisín and Eimear, his entire family circle and the members of his club Lisnaskea Emmetts at this most difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this sad time.”

The 24-year-old lined out at centre-forward for Peter Canavan’s outfit against Down in the Ulster SFC quarter-final this year. He skippered his club to win the All-Ireland IFC title in February 2011 and helped Lisnaskea Emmetts reach the Fermanagh county senior football final this year. The final had been pencilled in for 29 September.

The Gaelic Players Association have also extended its condolences to those connected with the player.

“It is with great shock that we learned today of Brian Óg’s sudden death,” said GPA chief executive, Dessie Farrell. ”On behalf of the county playing body I would like to offer my sincerest sympathies to Brian Óg’s family, friends and fellow county and club players. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

President of Ulster Council, Aogán Ó ‘Fearghail said: ”It was with shock and deep sadness that I learnt this morning of the death of Brian Óg Maguire. I knew Brian Óg who was a committed Gael who represented his Club Lisnaskea Emmetts GAA and his County Fermanagh with great distinction and I had the privilege of presenting him with the Ulster Intermediate Club Championship Cup in 2011.

“I express the Ulster Council’s and my own deep and heartfelt sympathy to Brian Og’s parents Brian and Eileen, his sisters Roisin and Eimear, his entire family circle and his Club. My thoughts and prayers are with them all at this time.

“This tragic event reminds me of the words of Aeschylus: ‘Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God’.”
