Fionnuala Britton ruled out of World Championships

The Wicklow runner will take an “extended break” while she recovers from a recent chest infection.

IRELAND’S DOUBLE EUROPEAN Cross Country champion Fionnuala Britton will not compete at the World Championships next month.

Britton, 28, is taking an “extended break” from competitive competition on medical advice after she struggled to get over a recent chest infection.

The Wicklow runner would have been one of Ireland’s best hopes of a track medal when the Worlds get underway in Moscow on 10 August.

Coach Chris Jones confirmed that Britton will not compete for the rest of the track season to allow her time to recover fully.

“Fionnuala has taken longer than anticipated to get over the recent chest infection which ruled her out of the European Team Track and Field Championships,” Jones said in a statement released by Athletics Ireland.

“We are not willing to take any unnecessary risks and we have worked closely with the medical team with a view of having Fionnuala back to full health for the cross country season.

“Fionnuala has returned to running this week and we will continue to monitor her as she returns to full fitness.”
