2013 All-Ireland U21 winning captain departs Galway panel for a month

Manager Kevin Walsh confirmed Fiontan Ó Curraoin is to take time out.

GALWAY’S 2013 ALL-Ireland U21 winning captain Fiontan Ó Curraoin has departed the county’s senior football panel for a month after an injury-plagued spring.

But manager Kevin Walsh has denied that the midfielder has quit the Tribesmen squad for the year.

Galway’s league campaign concluded when they lost out to Cavan in early April and missed out on the chance to claim promotion to Division 1.

They start their Connacht campaign on Saturday 18 June against Mayo or London.

And Ó Curraoin has taken a month out as he battles a groin injury, with defender Cathal Sweeney also battling injury.

“Fiontan O’Curraoin is finding it hard to shrug off a groin strain that bothered him right through the league so he is taking a few weeks out now to see how it goes,” outlined Walsh.

He was supposed to be playing in Cavan, but he came off in the game before it.

“There is lots of stuff going on with that groin injury so he is just looking at things to try to get a strategy to clear things up.

At the minute he will be taking a month out.

“Injury wise, Cathal Sweeney is definitely under pressure. He hurt his shoulder a couple of weeks ago in a club game.”
