UCD close the gap on leaders Waterford after 5-goal thriller

Two goals from Jason McLelland initially put the Students in command.

UCD CLOSED THE gap on league leaders Waterford with a thrilling 3-2 win in a top-of-the-table clash at the Belfield Bowl this evening.

Two goals from Jason McLelland put the Students in command, before a Greg Sloggett penalty in the 70th minute, after Georgie Kelly was fouled by Kenny Browne, appeared to make the game safe.

However, UCD were made to sweat ultimately, as late goals from Kenny McEvoy and Davy McDaid ensured a tense finish.

Elsewhere, bottom-of-the-table Wexford beat Cabinteely 1-0 at Stradbrook.

Eoin Porter scored the only goal of the game on 39 minutes after fine work from Adam Hanlon, whose cross was converted by the substitute.

Finally, Athlone Town drew 2-2 at home against Longford Town.

Conor Barry gave the hosts the lead after 10 minutes, before Jake Kelly equalised just before half-time.

Ethan Keogh restored Athlone’s advantage, but Enda Curran’s late goal denied Roddy Collins a first win since taking over as manager of the First Division strugglers.
