The Evening Fix...now with added Bartman

Here are the things we learned, loved and shared today.

HERE ARE THE things we learned, loved and shared today as we round off the day in three easy steps.

THINGS WE LEARNED

#ARREST: A man in his 40s is being questioned at a Kerry garda station in relation to the brutal double murder of Jolanta Lubiene and her eight-year-old daughter Enrika at their Killorglin home last weekend.

#SNOWDEN: Former US intelligence operative Edward Snowden may follow Julian Assange into the safe arms of Ecuador. The South American county says it has received a formal request for asylum from the 30-year-old who left Russia earlier today for an unknown destination. He is wanted in America on espionage charges.

#SHOOTING: Gardaí in Limerick arrested a 19-year-old man in the early hours of this morning after a 21-year-old was shot in the face at Hyde Road. The victim is recovering in hospital where his injuries have been described as not life-threatening.

#ABORTION: It has emerged today that a number of TDs and Senators have met to discuss the possibility of invoking Article 27 of the Constitution to force a referendum on the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013. Junior Minister Brian Hayes dismissed the idea, stating the public has already voted twice on the matter.

#PRICELESS: Six oil paintings by well-known Dublin artist Evie Hone were stolen from a Galway church in broad daylight yesterday. Parish priest Fr Martin McNamara told TheJournal.ie that the depictions of the Stations of the Cross had hung in the Kiltullagh church since 1946.

#SPORT: It was a busy day in GAA, with a couple of surprise outcomes in Connacht and Leinster. TheScore.ie were keeping tabs on all the championship action, including that draw game between Leitrim and London’s footballers and Dublin’s almost-heroic efforts against Kilkenny in Portlaoise.

THINGS WE LOVED

An anonymous reader sent us this image today, which we obviously loved. If it was you and you’d like a credit, mail me on sinead@thejournal.ie. Oh, and it came with the caption: “Mothercare at its best in Limerick!!”

THINGS WE SHARED

A new star emerged to day, with calls already being made to give this dog his own TV3 show.

  • This impeccable photobomb…by a dog. Twitter went wild for the little pup who stole the show from former Clare hurler Jamsie O’Connor during TV3′s post-match coverage of the Munster semi-final clash between Cork and Clare.

  • This really clear satellite picture of Alaska, released by NASA last week, has started to worry people. Business Insider tells us why.
  • Is Television a Human Right? The Atlantic has explored that complex question, looking at prisoner requests, United Nations declarations and court rulings.
  • Have a spare 12 minutes? Relive the year 1990. Seriously, do it. The Bartman, Home Alone, Ghost, Looney Tunes and Beverly Hills 90210 equals ‘nostalgia heaven’.
