Floyd Mayweather says Conor McGregor fight 'likely to happen'

A potential bout between the two fighters has been heavily discussed in recent months.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER SAYS a crossover fight between Conor McGregor and him is “likely to happen”.

The former five-weight world boxing champion has been in retirement since September 2015, but has suggested he is now set to fight the Irish UFC star, pending negotiations between the two athletes’ camps.

A potential bout between the two fighters has been heavily discussed in recent months, with critics often dismissing it as unlikely to ever occur.

The sceptics have suggested both McGregor and Mayweather are only entertaining such talk in an attempt to gain publicity and enhance their respective brands.

But speaking to Sky Sports, Mayweather was adamant that the realisation of the event was a distinct possibility.

“Most likely it will happen,” the American boxer said.

That’s the only fight that will get me back in the ring. He’s going to do a job on his side and we are going to do a job on my side and hopefully all the fans in the UK come over and support me.

“I don’t know (when it will be), I need to communicate with my team, the fight hasn’t been made yet, but it is all about entertainment so hopefully we can make it happen.”

It remains unconfirmed whether any prospective fight between the two would be based on the rules of boxing, MMA or a variation between the two.

Last month, however, it emerged that Floyd Mayweather was offered $25 million by UFC president Dana White to take on McGregor in a boxing match.
