Former Man United player jailed for selling stolen car parts

Ronnie Wallwork, 34, was sentenced to 15 months in prison this afternoon.

AN EX-MANCHESTER UNITED player was sentenced to 15 months in prison today for selling on stolen car parts.

Ronnie Wallwork, 34, was arrested last November after Lancashire police uncovered a “vehicle-breaking” operation which he was running from a Newton Heath scrapyard.

Wallwork pled guilty to three counts of handling stolen goods worth £43,000 at an earlier hearing of Preston Crown Court.

Today, Judge Simon Newell refused the defence’s request for a suspended sentence, saying that a jail term was necessary in light of the evidence.

Wallwork joined Manchester United as an apprentice in 1993 before turning professional two years later.

Although he spent seven seasons at Old Trafford, he never managed to establish himself as a first-team regular and made just 19 appearances for the club before moving on to West Bromwich Albion in 2002.

In 2006, he was the victim of a serious stabbing, an incident which saw his “promising career [...] tragically cut short,” Wallwork’s representative Rachel Woods told the court (see Daily Mail).

“Thereafter he has struggled to find a proper path to continue with his life,” Woods said, adding that Wallwork “had clearly succumbed to temptation in a stage of his life when his finances had taken a dramatic turn for the worse.”

Wallwork received 15 months concurrently on each of the three counts.
