League of Ireland refs won't be using the vanishing free-kick spray this season

FAI “wish to carry out more research into its effectiveness.”

VANISHING FREE-KICK spray won’t be introduced to the SSE Airtricity League this season.

League bosses have decided not to equip referees with cans of the “magic” foam when the new domestic campaign kicks off next month.

The spray, which is used to mark out the correct position for free-kicks and the defensive wall, has been in use in South America for years.

It became increasingly popular following a successful trial at the World Cup last summer and has since been adopted in English and European competitions.

But Irish refs will stick to traditional methods of marking out the 10 yards for the 2015 season.

An FAI spokesman confirmed to The42: “We will not be introducing vanishing spray into the SSE Airtricity League this season as we wish to carry out more research into its effectiveness.”
