Could Carl Froch and George Groves sell 80,000 tickets for Wembley?

Promoter Eddie Hearn is leaning towards a London stadium for the British superfight on 31 May.

CARL FROCH AND George Groves could meet in front of 80,000 fans in Wembley — a move which would leave groundstaff with just 24 hours to prepare for the British superfight.

Promoter Eddie Hearn wants to pack out a football stadium for the grudge match on 31 May and is leaning towards one of London’s big grounds.

That leaves Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Wembley as the most likely options, with Hearn’s final decision likely to hinge on expected ticket demand.

England host Peru in a pre-World Cup friendly on 30 May but Hearn said that doesn’t rule out Wembley.

“It is a massive logistical challenge to stage a fight of this magnitude just a day later but I am doing everything I can to make sure I have the best options available,” he wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.

“That includes Wembley.”

The controversy surrounding Froch and Groves’ first fight in November last year has seen their rematch for the IBF and WBA middleweight titles billed as the biggest fight in British boxing history.

“Some people in the industry tell me this is a fight for 60,000 people,” Hearn said. “That would be perfect for the Emirates. But I do think we can do 80,000 people.

“More than 20,000 people have already signed up to our ticket alert site and I think we could sell 40,000 tickets in a day. That is also why, as much as Carl would love to fight in Nottingham, I want to look at bigger venues.”
