Galvin definitely out of Munster opener

Limerick manager Maurice Horan says his star midfielder is on a four-week weights programme for his injured knee but could yet miss the entire season

MAURICE HORAN SAYS John Galvin is definitely out of Limerick’s Munster championship opener with Waterford.

In fact the Croom midfielder may miss the whole championship if a four-week rehab programme to build up his knee is not successful.

“He’s still in the same place as he was when he got the diagnosis,” Horan told TheScore today. “He’s basically on a weights programme on his knee to build up the muscles around it. ”After four weeks of that, he’ll check and see if he gets cleared or not.”

There had been good news about Galvin’s injury in recent days but Horan was keen to clarify the situation.

“Definitely, he was always out of the Waterford game. It’s a very serious injury.

“He severed it completely last year so they grafted it back together and the graft actually tore this time. So that’s what happened – it will require an operation at some stage.”

In 2011, Horan also had to do without star man Galvin, not to mention  Jim O’Donovan, Eoghan Joy, James Kelly and John Cooke because of injuries at different times, while Stephen Lucey and Mark O’Riordan were not always available for the championship due to hurling commitments.

This year Horan has had plenty more injury woe with O’ Donovan, Galvin, Johnny McCarthy, Seanie Buckley and Stephen Kelly sidelined but the Limerick manager will be hoping to have the medical room a little less crowded when his side face Waterford in the Munster championship.

“We hope to have (most people fit ),” added Horan. “It’s a long way out with two rounds of club championship football and hurling to be played.

“Obviously all of our players are in the football championship and the majority are in the hurling championship. Last year we got a serious raft of injuries and it really hampered us, particularly against Kerry.

“It’s too far out to call, in terms of personnel, at this stage.”
