CHELSEA’S GARY CAHILL could be a doubt for his side’s FA Cup semi-final this weekend, after spending two nights in hospital.
The defender was treated for gastroenteritis, a common illness which affects the stomach and bowel and causes diarrhoea and vomiting.
He was admitted to hospital on Tuesday and was released yesterday.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s fixture against Spurs, Conte suggested that Cahill might not be available for selection.
“He arrived at the training ground with a bit of fever,” he said.
“Our doctor preferred to bring him to the hospital and to check his condition.
“Not a serious problem, but now Gary is getting better and is improving a lot.
“If you ask me for tomorrow, my answer is it is very difficult. This period is not a lucky period for us.”
Cahill was one of four Chelsea players named on this season’s PFA Team of the Year this week. He was joined by David Luiz, N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard in the final line-up.
Captain John Terry has announced that he will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season. When asked if Terry could be in contention to replace Cahill tomorrow, Conte said:
“This season we have tried to have two options in every position. I think the right position for John when we play with three central defenders is in the central position, in the place that David Luiz is now playing. I have to make the best decision for the starting XI tomorrow.”
