Gavin Duffy an unused sub as Salthill/Knocknacarra rocked in Galway SFC

The former Connacht rugby star was named on the bench but was unable to influence events on the field.

GAVIN DUFFY WAS on the bench for Salthill/Knocknacarra this afternoon but did not see any action as his side were beaten in their Galway SFC opener at Pearse Stadium.

Salthill lost 1-4 to 0-6 to An Cheathru Rua and Duffy, despite warming up twice in the second half, was an unused sub. The former Connacht rugby player has been training with the Mayo senior football team this season and was hoping to get some club championship minutes under his belt.

There was no score in the match for the opening 15 minutes — the opening stages were described by Galway Bay FM as ‘scrappy beyond belief’.

Cillian de Paor opened the scoring for An Cheathru Rua and Salthill/Knocknacarra saw a goal attempt trickle wide while having to settle for points. De Paor buried a shot past goalkeeper Shane Nallen to put An Cheathru Rua in the driving seat. The half ended 1-1 to 0-2 and scoring was just as rare after the break. Salthill/Knocknacarra could not muster a goal of their own and are now facing a long road back to the knock-out stages, through the back-door system.

There is speculation that Duffy will play for the Salthill-Knocknacarra intermediate team in Galway IFC tomorrow against Headford.
