THE UNDER-17 World Cup reaches the quarter-final stage tomorrow and plenty of attention will be paid to England’s clash with the United States.
Manchester United’s Angel Gomes and Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho have both caught the eye already but the Americans have one name in particular that stands out.
Timothy Weah.
The 17-year-old is the son of former AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain striker George and hit a hat-trick against Paraguay in a Round of 16 clash on Monday.
Like his father did, Tim is plying his trade with PSG, who signed him to a three-year professional deal in July, with the teenager having been part of the club’s academy since he was 14.
Tim was born in New York and cut his teeth as part of the New York Red Bulls’ underage setup.
Weah Senior – crowned the Fifa World Footballer of the Year in 1995, while also winning the Ballon ‘Or the same year - has distanced himself from the game over the last number of years and focused all his energies in politics.
In 2005, he was runner-up in the Liberian presidential election but is running again this year. Earlier in October, he picked up 38.4% of the vote but fell short of an absolute majority. So, there will be a run-off against his closest competitor next month.
Now 53, Weah Senior won league titles in France and Italy while he also picked up an FA Cup winner’s medal during his loan spell with Chelsea in 2000.
