15-year old Irish tennis star Georgia Drummy qualifies for Junior Australian Open

It’s the first Grand Slam appearance of her fledgling career.

15-YEAR OLD Georgia Drummy has qualified for the first Grand Slam of her fledgling career after making it through to the first round of the Junior Australian Open this morning.

Drummy, the world’s 220nd ranked junior according to the International Tennis Federation, beat the USA’s Abigail Altick — ranked 115 places  above her — in straight sets earlier today.

From Blackrock, Drummy was in full control early on, cruising to a 6-2 opening set win but Altick fought back in the second.

Both players exchanged early breaks before Drummy looked to have made the decisive move after winning against serve in the 11th game. However, her opponent broke straight back to tie the match at six games apiece.

Drummy rallied again, however, to take the tie-break 7-2 and close out the match.

The Dubliner is widely regarded as Ireland’s brightest tennis prospect, winning the Belfast City ITF junior tournament girls singles title as far back as August 2014.
