THE EDITOR OF the Irish Times, Geraldine Kennedy is to step down and retire according to widespread reports this evening.

RTÉ reports that Kennedy told colleagues at a news conference that she would not seek to extend her contract when it expires in September.

A number of her journalism contemporaries have tweeted the news including RTÉ reporter Fergal Keane, news anchor Bryan Dobson and Sunday Times editor Frank Fitzgibbon who speculates that her replacement will be appointed by June.

The newspaper itself said they had “no comment” on the matter when contacted by TheJournal.ie this evening.

Kennedy has been editor of the Irish Times since 2002, the first woman to do so.

She previously served as Progressive Democrat TD for Dun Laoghaire, and as a political correspondent with the Irish Times and the Sunday Tribune.
