Watch Gerry Adams read his tweets - and yes, he writes them himself

“They are what people have described as a grand Sinn Féin strategy and others have described as weird and peculiar.”

THERE’S NO “GRAND Sinn Féin strategy” behind Gerry Adams’s at times controversial, at times confusing, Twitter stream of consciousness.

This is the verdict from the man himself who came to TheJournal.ie offices this week for interview. Before he departed, he explained the genesis behind some of his more whimsical tweets. Yes, they really happened and yes, he wrote them himself.

He told us:

Sin é. They are what people have described as a grand Sinn Féin strategy and others have described as weird and peculiar.

Earlier in his interview, the Sinn Féin leader said of his Twitter presence:

“Some may have at different times have some doubts about some of the things that I write. I was just reading Michael Scott of The Waterboys this morning saying that he also gets into trouble on Twitter so it’s part of the medium.

“Look, the party came forward and said to me – I didn’t even know what Twitter was – you should go on Twitter. I was on Facebook up to that time.

Then I looked at it and said, well, if I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it myself.

“So of course I do put up political stuff and I do put up statements and if I’m doing something in the course of the day, I do tweet that. But the ones that get the attention are simply me tweeting what I’m thinking at that particular time.”
