Career Change

Goldie Lookin' Chain member elected Labour councillor in Wales

Yes, really.

EVER WONDERED WHAT retired rappers do?

Us neither, but for one rapper at least, it has proved to be a chance to make a fairly dramatic career change. Rhys Hutchings, a founder member of the spoof rap group Goldie Lookin’ Chain, has been elected as a Labour councillor in Wales.

Hutchings said it was “the hardest thing I’ve had to do since my Duke of Edinburgh [Gaisce] Award when I was fifteen years old].

“The hard work starts, well, tomorrow, I guess,” he told the BBC.

Hutchings gained one of three seats in the local ward after garnering 981 votes in the vote on Friday, which took three recounts before a final result was declared. He said that he had decided to run to make a difference in his local area:

Over the last couple of years we worked very closely as a band with the local council in Newport, and we’ve put on a few events, we’ve done some things and we’ve worked with the mayor and the leader of the council, and it just opened my eyes to the fact that we can actually make a difference. People can run for council and get in and make a difference.

He added:

If you want to make a difference for the town that you love and you care about, then get involved. and that’s basically what it was. I just realised it was something that was an option. And so I went for it and here we are.

Hutchings said the rest of the band are “coming around” to politics and said he’s going to try and get them all involved.

The Welsh rap collective (yes, that’s a thing) was founded in 2000 and has reached number 3 in the UK singles chart, played Glastonbury, and released a Greatest Hits album.

Here’s a song from Goldie Lookin Chain. We opted against the intriguing Your Missus is a Nutter and Your Mother’s Got A Penis and went for a classic. Ahem.
