A spokespserson said two crews were sent to the island to try to get control of the blaze again.

On Twitter, Dublin Fire Brigade said it is unknown at present whether the fires were started deliberately, noting these types of fires are always “more prevalent during prolonged dry spell”.

They will be monitoring progress throughout the day, as gorse fires can rapidly get out of control.
