THE 2017 GRAND National was won by 14/1 shot One For Arthur at Aintree this afternoon.
The Lucinda Russell-trained, Derek Fox-mounted horse overtook the heavily-backed 8/1 favourite Blaklion in a dramatic finish that left Cause of Causes (16/1) second and Davy Russell’s Saint Are (25/1) in third.
Taking fifth place behind Blaklion was the 50/1 shot Gas Line Boy.
One For Arthur is just the second Scottish winner of the Grand National, taking up the mantle from Rubistic in 1979.
“This is a fairytale but for excellent medical care I wouldn’t have made it,” said Fox.
“This is unbelievable, he was so courageous. Some of us will never be a champion jockey but this is a day when the likes of me can strike against the big boys,” added the 24-year-old from Sligo.
“That was amazing, I’m tearful but it is amazing,” added Russell.
It’s total credit to Derek, he never panicked. I have just won the National. We always thought barring an accident he would be a National winner and it has come true.”
Fox was a doubt to be able to take part in today’s race after a bad fall on 9 March in Carlisle. However, the Kinross yard stable jockey pulled through in time to take the saddle just three days ago to prove his fitness for Aintree.
