ANTIONE GRIEZMANN OPENED the scoring in Madrid, his sublime effort putting Atletico 1-0 up, before Kevin Gameiro sealed a Champions League win over Roma tonight.
In finding the back of the net, Griezmann scored his first goal in eight matches across all competitions and ended a long drought.
And what a way to do it.
Atletico Madrid’s hopes of Champions League qualification are faint, but still alive after tonight’s win.
Griezmann was the star of the show, his sensational scissor-kick volley and a sublime assist downing 10-man Roma.
The 69th minute saw substitute Angel Correa keep the ball in play, and his cross hung up for Griezmann to launch himself into an unstoppable flying volley.
A draw in the Spanish capital would have sent Roma — who went into the game off the back of six straight wins in all competitions — into the knockout stages, but they’ll need more going forward.
They set up defensively from the get-go, and it was evident it would take something special to break them down.
Griezmann’s magical impact provided just that spark Atleti needed, the striker following his wondergoal up by playing Kevin Gameiro through to double the lead shortly after Roma defender Bruno Peres saw red.
Atleti must now win at already-qualified Chelsea to have any hope of qualifying, with Roma still in pole position in Group C ahead of their clash with Qarabag.
