ICELANDIC WELTERWEIGHT GUNNAR Nelson will make his US debut at UFC 189, it has been confirmed tonight.
The submission specialist (4-1 UFC, 13-1-1 MMA), who fights out of SBG, faces England’s John Hathaway (7-2 UFC, 17-2 MMA) in Las Vegas’ MGM Grand on 11 July.
Nelson comes into the bout on the back of his first defeat as he suffered a split decision loss to Rick Story in the main event in Stockholm five months ago.
Known as ‘Ireland’s adopted son’ as he has spent much of his MMA career training under John Kavanagh in Dublin, the 26-year-old joins team-mate Conor McGregor, who takes on featherweight champion Jose Aldo in the main event, on the card.
Robbie Lawler’s re-match with Rory MacDonald will be the co-main event.
