Pastures new: Hanley set to take over as Westmeath boss

The county board have successfully persuaded their no 1 target to take over the position on a full-time basis.

WESTMEATH ARE READY to appoint Brian Hanley as their new manager.

Hanley was previously made caretaker boss after ex-Offaly hurler Kevin Martin left the position back in April.

And Hanley’s successful stint in the job has convinced the county board to appoint him on a permanent basis.

Hanley had managed Liam Mellows, however their recent exit from the Galway SHC has paved the way for him to be appointed as Westmeath boss.

Speaking in relation to his intentions upon taking charge, Hanley told reporters:

“The plan will apply to the senior, under 21 and minor teams. There has never really been structures put in place in Westmeath before and it’s needed. Westmeath needs a professional set-up and the players and county board must be prepared to buy into it.”

Westmeath endured a promising All-Ireland campaign under Hanley’s guidance, almost shocking Galway in the Leinster SHC, and also pushing Antrim close in the All-Ireland Qualifiers.
