THE SCULPTURE KNOWN as ‘Homeless Jesus’ will soon be arriving in Dublin and will have a home – on the grounds of Christ Church Cathedral.
Casts of the much talked about statue have been installed in cities in North America, Canada, and Europe. After a competition among prospective Dublin sites, the cathedral was the location chosen by sculptor Tim Schmalz.
His 7-foot wide bronze sculpure depicts a park bench with a faceless cloaked figure lying on it. It actually depicts Jesus but this is only shown by the holes in the figure’s feet.
The ‘Homeless Jesus’ statue will be blessed on 1 May at a special service by Archbishops Michael Jackson and Diarmuid Martin. Schmalz will also be in attendance.
Dean of Christ Church, the Very Reverend Dermot Dunne, who recently slept rough to highlight the scale of the homeless crisis said he believes the statue goes beyond religion.
“We are in the centre of the city, where I’m seeing homelessness all the time, and it’s getting worse.”
The sculpture is being presented to the people of Dublin by an anonymous North American Episcopalian benefactor, who is also giving the sculpture to 11 other European cities, including the Vatican City in Rome.
