Hopkins TKO ruled illegal, champ gets his belt back

Bernard Hopkins is once again the WBC light-heavyweight champion following a ruling in the United States.

VETERAN BOXER BERNARD Hopkins has regained his WBC light-heavyweight belt without having to step back into a boxing ring.

The 46-year-old was judged to have lost to Chad Dawson by technical knockout last Saturday night.

However, on reviewing events this week, the WBC board has ruled that Dawson’s action in lifting his opponent off the ground and pushing him away – causing Hopkins to fall and dislocate his shoulder – were intentional and illegal.

“I feel very happy. I feel that justice was done,” Hopkins told ESPN.

“I’d like to thank Mr Sulaiman and the board for looking at the tape and just for taking the time to look at the tape. They came up with what I think is the right decision. Like me or hate me, I think most people will think it’s the right decision that they made.”
